Osaka aquarium is one of the largest in the world. It’s actual name has the word “kaiyukan” at the end. Kaiyukan literally means playing in the sea pavilion. It boasts more than 30,000 species and holds 11,000 tons of water. There are penguins, otters, sea lions, whale sharks, dolphins, jellyfish and rays just to name a few.

Osaka Aquarium is Huge

We are not kidding when we say it is the largest in the world. Sydney’s aquarium can’t compete with this big tank. It is huge. It took us more than one hour to walk the whole aquarium. Probably take longer if you dilly daddle and want to take in the whole kaiyukan experience.

Watch what we saw in our video below.

We have seen a whole lot of marine life in just over 1 hour. It was tiring but it was worth every minute. You will come across many different marine life during the long down spiral walk. The highlight for me was seeing the weird jellyfishes and ocean crabs. They looked like from out of this world.

What To Bring

You need to bring water, especially in the summer season. We finished a bottle of water each before we got to the exit. A great comfortable walking shoes will also be good. Like we said, it’s a huge aquarium and you will walk quite a bit. We were there during April and it was still cold. Walking around the Osaka Aquarium is a great exercise, you really do meet your daily 5000 steps requirements. Actually you meet it after walking from the train station to the Aquarium.

Bring some snacks so you can eat it at one of the designated resting areas. Like I said bring water for when you are thirsty and to accompany your snack with. And of course lots of money, you will need it. Specially with kids.

Anywhere to eat?

Of course! Walking along the street that goes to Osaka Aquarium are great restaurants just waiting for tourists to spend their cash. Check out our blog about food in Japan. Look under the heading Osaka-Ko. That is the name of the area where Osaka Aquarium is located.
